I was shocked that Biden pulled it together for the State of the Union. He not only managed to remain alert and coherent for 90 minutes, he delivered a powerful new case for a sort of Progressive populism that almost no other Democrats have been able to articulate. Some of the commentary has diminished the significance of some items on Biden’s populist wishlist as small potatoes or pandering. But efforts such as the crackdown on junk bank charges or non-compete agreements set a very refreshing Progressive (capital “P”) tone. Maybe the dig at excessive hotel bills (including hidden resort charges?), was a bit obtuse, but Biden included other compelling and intelligent crowd pleasers, including a dig at excessive oil profits, higher taxes on the wealthy, and big tech antitrust and data ownership reforms. The cameras cut to Elizabeth Warren smiling in the audience. It was finally a good night for Libertarian for Warren.
